Why is Vancouver such a popular location to film movies? |

It seems like a lot of movies are filmed there. Some are supposed to be set in Vancouver. And others are shot there but set elsewhere. Anyone know or have
ideas?
For Vancouver residents, do you like that movies are shot there? It seems like fun (if you're into that sort of thing, I guess). |

I believe its because it's cheap and there's a lot of land to do so.

I figure that it's the closest major Canadian city to Los Angeles, and it's cheaper to shoot in Canada. Plus it can be made to look like other
locations easily...?

I find that lots of shows that are supposed to take place in Seattle are filmed in Vancouver a lot too. But I guess it's because the climate is similar
and... it's cheaper.

It's all about what's cheap, a lot of movies have come to Michigan over the past year because a new tax break was created to bring the film industry to
the state.

Tons of movies are shot in Toronto too. Especially when they want a 'big city' location like New York or Chicago.

i'm guessing it's cheap(er).
i love it when movies are filmed in vancouver because you see (and meet) celebs on a daily basis which is pretty cool. |

Yeah, it's all about tax incentives in the film industry. Some US states are starting to get competitive though, and a few have recently passed bills that
will make filming there cheaper than Canada (sorry, can't remember which ones off the top of my head).

I live in Vancouver. Way back when, I was watching sisterhood of the travelling pants, and I was all excited that I recognized Santorini, Greece in the movie.
Later, I looked it up to confirm that it was filmed there, and saw that the movie was filmed in Santorini, Baja and VANCOUVER. I felt so dumb for recognizing
Greece but not my own hometown
BUt it is neat to see movies being filmed a lot. I'm always seeing signs everywhere pointing to sets. They film a TON at my old University. I once saw Ashton Kutcher/Demi Moore on campus. |

I live in Michigan and we are becoming a hot spot for films and TV shows. An HBO TV pilot has been filmed in my city recently. Drew Barrymore filmed a movie
around Detroit and at U of M in Ann Arbor over the summer. An independent movie with Michael Chiklis called High School High is being filmed here in Oakland
County.. I forget who it was but a major producer opened an office I believe in Troy a while back.

Besides being cheap, it can double as a lot of US locations, so yeah it helps. California is going to have to up their film incentives because production is
down in Los Angeles. All the production reports I see have movies in like NM, LA, or some other state. But a lot of filmmakers here have been lobbying for some
incentives to keep filming in California.

they film smallville in vancouver and i've seen the mansion where the movie 'along came a spider' was filmed.... but yeah they usually dubb van as
North Hollywood.....

I saw them filming Dead Like Me a while back, and I've seen all sorts of celebs on Robson street here ...Saw Julia Stiles a while back.
