IMO Amex should have one above all other companies, only because you know that card means a high credit limit, and someone could easily take advantage of that if they can get their hands on the card.

But like I've said, I just ask. No biggy if you don't have ID, but I do ask for it. Do I require it? Absolutely not. I won't cancel your transaction because you don't have ID. I won't withhold your jeans and hoodies because you wanna use an unsigned card. I was never told at the beginning of employment that it violates a merchant agreement if I do ask, but I'd rather get yelled at for asking than for not asking. It's too easy to copy someone's signature, and if it were me, I'd personally appreciate being asked to prove myself. I know that might sound crazy, but it almost feels like the company is making sure you're in good hands, if that makes any sense, to have you prove it's you, rather than let someone just use your card without backing it up.

ETA (after Dana's comment): Most customers appreciate my asking, and I get thanked for it more than fought with over it. They appreciate keeping an eye on their credit. I've had more than a handful of customers who've already been through identity theft, and their stories scared me into writing See ID on the back of every single card I have, regardless of credit limit or anything else. That shit is not easily rectified, unfortunately.

I also want to add that my managers know that I ask for ID and none of them have an issue with it. I've asked in front of our DM before, and she was okay with it as well. Many of my co-workers ask for ID. It's not a crisis situation, it's no big deal.

Out of curiosity, do you also have issues with requiring identification when making a return? Cuz that's store policy, but I get a lot of customers who complain.

Dana, not to my knowledge. The only time a card gets declined is when it's mis-swiped on the customers end (how that happens I dunno, but my screen will tell me it's declined and then when I swipe on my end it goes through.. maybe the strip is de-magnetized on one slider and not the other, I dunno), or if you're over your credit limit. We personally can't decline any purchase though.
