On top of giving them a quiz the second day of class, I'm going to give them 3 other quizzes in the first week of classes.
I'm sure they'll all love me. |

We are reviewing the first two weeks, so I just want to make sure they are ok with everything. Plus more quizzes, means more grades and it's better for the
average anyway.
The first quiz is just on basic formulas and I gave them the entire formula sheet. The next one is easy too, just like properties (distributive, associative, etc.). The last one is probably the hardest, but we are going to review everything the day before. |

So 4 quizzes in the first week? Meanie
I give a quiz for every new text they read or film they see. They bitched from here to nowhere when I gave the first one last Thursday. Class started August 18th-1 in 2-3 weeks and they act like I am OMGHORRIBLE |

It is very necessary.
They were very unhappy with the formula quiz on Monday. You can't be cool. They need discipline and I think that they want that stuff. |

I pretty much gave them everything though.
And I'll just tell the parents that I'm giving them the quizzes to assess where their child is at. It's better to catch a problem right away than to wait until the big unit test and then realize, "Oh crap, I don't know them." I'd actually like to give a quick quiz after every new topic I teach. |

Mistress Darcy wrote:3 quizzes. But since a class drops out each day (it's a rotating schedule) most of my classes only have 4 days with me this week, which means 3 days of quizzes. I said it wrong in my first post But I think that you should give quizzes. They don't realize that more assessments actually help them |

Yea, no I do that as well.
I just like to keep them in order. Plus, as a new teacher, I want to kind of scare them at first so they know that I'm serious about working. Especially since the teacher that I replaced left because she had no control over the class. And since I have 10th graders so they know that I'm new there. I had one girl be like, "Oh I love new teachers. They are so much easier and nicer." I was like haha you haven't met me yet |

I like quizzes just to make sure everything is on track. I probably give between 10-15 short easy ones throughout a semester. I hate how many students expect
me to let them make it up if they fail
How about no?

Yea, I like quizzes too! Because maybe the student seems like they are on track in class, but when it comes to the test, they do awful.
I'd hate to be in your class though, |

i guess my concern is that if a teacher chooses to do that within the system in which i teach it may yield potentially skewed information regarding some
students' progress.
tests and quizzes are weighted 66% in PowerGrade, while daily work is 33%. a student who has test anxiety can have a grade disproportionately low to what they actually know and can do. |

Yeah, unavoidable here-the department actually tells me how many essays I have to give and how long they have to be
Which grade are you doing again? |

In the school where I work tests and quizzes are worth 95% and class participation/homework is 5%. It's a private prep school though, so I don't know
if that makes a difference.
It's just my hope that with more quizzes, if a kid messes up on one, it doesn't affect their grade that much. Plus, to be honest, I'm practically giving them everything they need for the quiz/test. For example, my formula quiz is the same exact thing as the formula sheet except I deleted the formulas. The other quiz is the same as the nights HW. So it's not like I want them to do bad. |

I give one quiz per week on vocabulary. The huge problem many students have on the state math assessment is due to not knowing the math vocabulary. I really
don't care if they know "verbal definitions". I'm more concerned about them being able to identify. Our quizzes count as a daily grade
rather than a test.
