I thought they only gave them through invite or you had to at least spend $100,000 a year in order to be offered one.
Can anyone get a black American Express card now?

I work at a mall in Denver and during the DNC week, a lady used her Black American Express. She didn't appear to be famous or rich, but she had one.

not just ANYONE can have one, but you don't have to be special, just rich.

There's a 16-year old kid I came across online recently that has one. He said you still have to be invited.

Exactly, I didn't mean to say that you have to look rich to be rich, but I meant in the rich and famous, recognizable way...not by appearance. I knew that
would be taken a different way than what I meant...

my boss has one, and told me you don't have to be invited per say, but if you're spending a certain amount it is offered, so I guess in that sense it
is an "invitation"

You're sure it was American Express? I have a Citi card that is black. I used it about a month ago and when the sales lady handed it back to me she said
that at first she thought it was the black AMEX, but then when handing it back she noticed the Citi logo.

Uh, no. Amex asks you to becomes a member based on what you spend a year and how much you make. You cannot apply. I've come to realize that rich people
don't always dress "rich"---every damn person I've ever known that owned the nicest things or were basically billionaires, always dressed the
plainest.

Those black cards are so cool and HEAVY. A customer handed on to me and I almost dropped it!

Sometimes, employees of those departments also get invitations, or get those benefits without really qualifying for them. Those are very high-end departments
within credit card divisions so not anyone can work there to begin with. We are far from rich and we have a Citi Ultima (Citi's equivalent to the AMEX
black) and a Citigold checking account just because hubby works for their high-end financial department.
