are they (the hospital staff) required by law to keep you there, even if you and/or your family don't want you to be there?

I think so. When my friend tried she was taken to the hospital and the police were called. She was only allowed to leave the hospital once the police were
satisfied that she had a safe place to go to (her dad's house) and someone to look after her.

I think so, at least until you have a psych eval. And at my hospital you also automatically have a staff member with you at all times for 24 hours. |

you can be involuntarily committed but it depends on circumstance. i believe they have to evaluate you, complete a safety check but if youare over 14 and/or
your family doesn't agree then they have to discharge you. legally, they get away with that by saying it was against medical advice if they feel that you
should be kept, but mostly they do the eval and hook you up with outpatient services of some kind and send you home.

If they think the person is a danger to themselves or others, they can hold the person for 72 hrs. If you slit your wrists or took a butt load of serious
drugs, I doubt you would be able to talk them out of not holding you. Also depends on your past medical history with psychiatric issues.

the crisis center will hold you temporarily until a bed is found if you need to be hospitalized. a hospital might just keep you 24 hrs for observation. I
don't believe there is a specific time frame for holding. i think it depends on mindset of the patient and how much of a danger were they to themselves or
how mch danger are they still to themselves and what were the triggers

medical needs over mental health and legal goes over mental health as well. I've had two students with mental health/suicidal/homicidal issues and one was
taken to jail before the crisis center , the other was released against medical advice because the parent didn't want them to be at that facility. the
kicker of course is that we can't not accept them back in school after. had to send another child who heard voices 5 times to the crisis center

I was 14. I don't understand all that much about it because I was so young, but they had a nurse stay with me in a room overnight. They also had a
psychologist come in and promise that I would see someone as soon as I was out.
Whenever I go to the doctor now they'll one and awhile do psych evaluations just to make sure everything's okay. |

I'm not positive but I think in PA a family member has to sign to commit you (basically a parent or spouse). If nobody is willing to do that then there
would have to be a court case and probably some kind of social service worker would have to prove that for your own safety and wellbeing you need to be
hospitalized and the court could overrule you and the family or whatever.

In PA , I can commit as the school in lieu of the parent. after a temporary period , if aparent refuses to come get the child or sign, dhs is brought in via
the hospital. we always try to get the parent though. at 14, a child can commit themselves
