IDK, I just really love New Jersey because of all of the history, especially in my area. I'm 30 minutes from the shore (LBI), 20 minutes from Philadelphia/South Street, where I can get my urban kicks if I need to be in a city, 30 minutes from big areas like Cherry Hill, etc., and there are tons of fields and parks, riverwalks, forests, lakes, the Pine Barrens farms and shopping around, tons of things to do, lots of markets, really nice people, little crime where I live (knock on wood) and I live in the suburbs so I get my peace and quiet! There's a little bit of everything here, even mountains. I'm really defensive of New Jersey, because I think it's just full of the best little gems of towns and the best people, but I guess sometimes it's better that not many people do know just how great it is. I think it's a great place to live.

I did a week in North Wales and by the end of it I was doing this: There were three things to do: go to the pub, go to the convenience store, or go to the Indian/Chinese takeout place.

Posts: 902 (07/07/2008 5:28 AM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Friend Block Invite Ignore	Ok, I've been to both, I was an exchange student in the US in Philadelphia which is not far from New Jersey and I went to college in the UK (Cambridge). I seriously hated just about everything about England. It was the unhappiest time in my life. I'm usually a really happy and positve person. I've traveled a lot and lived in a few different countries and I was always able to find at least one thing I liked in each place - except for the UK, absolutely nothing appealed to be over there; the food was horrible, the weather was cold and dark, people drank a lot, our heater didn't work for 2 weeks over Christmas and everything was pretty expensive. The year I spend in the US on the other hand had it's ups and down but in general I loved been in the US (still do, I go back every chance I get). I still have a lot of american friends and if it works out job-wise I'd love to go back for good. I'm currently in Australia but I have to go back to the UK in October for my final year of college and geez if only I had the choice it would be America all the way.

One reason being that the $ is really cheap, so you'd be able to shop a lot more than you would in expensive England. Also, usually housing in England is poorly insulated (this is coming from a former Manchester exchange student) so unless you get a kick out of freezing your ass off, I'd pick NJ for that reason alone. York is gorgeous- BUT I'd personally prefer going there for a long weekend. In NJ you will be able to find things to do the entire 6 months and I really think you would have a better time there. They have jersey shore which is an ok beach, and it's easy to go into NYC by public transport.

Yes, right, because that's what going out is all about, where the hell do you live and what kinda friends have you got? I tend to go out with my friends, whose company I enjoy, we talk, we laugh, we drink a bit, we danc, sometimes we meet new people. sometimes we don't, no pretending or "escapades" - sad if you could never enjoy any of these things.

Kirky girly, kind of has a point as far as the campus being dead on the weekends, because it is mostly a commuter school. (I'm one of them) However, you are so so so close to the city, and the actual Upper Montclair, and downtown Montclair area is really nice. You've got a ton of coffeeshops, restaurants, shopping (and our very own Urban Outfitters store on a really cute street called Church St.) and did I mention about 15/20 minutes outside of New York? Although England would be super, definitely give NJ a chance, and if it is MSU that you would be coming to - there's always something there for someone to do. Lots of activities and clubs to join, so it won't be as bad as people make it out to be. As for residency, do try to get into the Village Apts - because well, they're actual apartments and not nearly as crammed as you would be in the dorms on campus (Blanton, Bohn, Webster, Stone). If you are placed within the dorms, Blanton and Bohn are the lesser evil of the pack. If you have any questions, just shoot me a message.
