If I were to ever have kids, I might let them get a job for the summer but probably would not enforce it. But they also probably wouldn't be allowed to spend money like I did.
Do you think a teenager should be required to work?

I grew up not having to work until I was 23. While I was in high school, it was practically forbidden in my house. I begged, but my mom said no every time. My
mom wanted to me to have my fun while I was young. In my early 20's I was in school off/on, was sick and unable to work, then I taking care of my
terminally ill grandmother. I would work off/on when I needed to buy extras or go on vacation or if my mom needed me to fill in somewhere (she managed a
staffing agency). I have been working since my grandmother passed (I'm 28 now), and although I am VERY grateful that I had the life I did...sometimes I
wish I had worked.

Oh and I feel the need to say this - there were a lot of people who used to make fun of/look down on my best friend and I because we lived at home for a long
time and didn't have to work. She was in school full time and her parents paid for everything. But you know what? Out of everyone that made fun of us and
talked shit - they are no better off than we are.

Yes. When I have kids I would want them to have a part time job in the summer. Or at least be involved in some sort of activities, like sports or volunteering.

When I was 16, my parents bought me a car and said I needed to pay for my own gas. They didn't throw a bunch of responsibility on me but it was just enough
to teach me how to work for what I want/need.

Yep. I mean, it depends on the parents, but I know that if I have any children, they will be expected to buy their own materialistic things once they're 16 (birthdays and holidays aside, of course). I would get my teen a car (a paid-in-cash, usedmobile - not that fresh-off-the-lot stuff), but (s)he would be responsible for insurance, gas, maintenance, etc. And I wouldn't get the car if (s)he didn't already have a job. That's how my folks did it with me and it seemed pretty fair. |

I will not give a flat out yes or no on this subject. I think it truly varies.

If they have the time, they can - also, if they aren't doing anything productive it's a good start.

I've worked since I was 14 during the summer, and my child/children will definitely have a summer job once they are old enough. I wouldn't want them
working during the school year, but there's no reason not to work during the summer. Unless they are doing some sort of volunteer work/program that
won't allow them time to work. The only thing I will do financially for my child after age 16 or so is give them money for college if I can afford it.
There's no reason they can't pay for their own clothes, entertainment, etc. (An occasional shopping trip is one thing).
I can't get my mind around the people who are saying they never had a job until age 18 or after. There's nothing wrong with it, but I really don't know anyone personally who didn't have a summer job when they were a teenager. I guess it depends on where you grow up too? |

I'm just gonna go ahead and say NO.
I think once you hit college, it's a different story and it depends on the situation. |

i'm turning 16 in 3 months and i still have never had a job.
at the same time i'm not sitting around with nothing to do this summer. i'm volunteering at a day camp for kids for all of june(7 AM-2:30PM M-F except Tuesdays) i'm going to summer school to get ahead, i'm taking a guitar class(something i've wanted to learn for a few years now) none of this is making me money...is that a bad thing? my mom still enjoys buying me things. when we go out to run errands she'll buy me the occasional pair of jeans i've been dying to get. there's a purse at target right now that i've wanted for awhile but it's an unspoken thing that if i want it i will get it myself. i buy cds myself...she recently bought me concert tickets and will do so again for my birthday in september(and drive us 6 hours to the show) my dad buys me stuff...the occasional concert tickets, mini shopping sprees like twice a year(like $200) i don't think any of this has made me a lazy person that doesn't know the value of money...i don't get an allowance, my mom gives me $25 every few weeks or so. |

I kind of hate my parents for not buying me a car. They set up this BS deal that they would match whatever I saved, so I could buy a car. The problem was, as
soon as I got a job, they expected me to buy everything from my clothes to my cheerleading stuff and I was only working 15-20 hours a week for $6.75 an hour. I
worked hard and deserved a car. I didn't expect the BMWs and the Mini Coppers, but I was a hardworker and a good teenager, who never did anything wrong.
