I got so used to him doing the same old tired historic/epic pieces that I never thought he'd be able to pull off a role like this. Major kudos. Also, Zoe Saldana is beyond pretty. She and Orlando had excellent chemistry, and make a pretty hot couple. That said, I didn't care for the story at all. What a convoluted, confusing mess. And the ending made me want to punch a duck. But I'd watch it again for Orlando and Zoe's performances.

I love Zoe, she does some great movies. And Orlando ... it's great to see him in anything that's not historic/epic. I thought it was ok though.

Shy was just such a great character and he played him so well. His whole storyline with Zoe made that movie for me. They really could have left out the whole Bill Paxton storyline. I get what they were trying to do but I don't think they quite accomplished it. I really think they should have just focused on Shy and Andrea.

Actually, I think that's what killed the movie for me. I agree that they should have just left that whole mess out and made it a movie that focused on Shy and Andrea's story. Or at least tried to have made the two storylines tie in better. And the whole sidebar with the Fritz character was just stupid. Spoiler [+] Cheesy, but I so wanted it to end with them living happily ever after. Of course, with the way that it ended, I don't know if that didn't happen, but I really would have liked to see it on screen. I just finished loading Kingdom of Heaven. I'm on an Orlando kick now.

The DC is almost an hour longer and trust me, the stuff cut out of the theatrical version is CRUCIAL! Watch the DC. It's brilliant. Honestly, if they'd left the film the way it was and didn't edit all to hell, it would have won Oscars. And I'm not even kidding. Spoiler [+] I wanted them to end up together too. I like to think that her father learned a lesson and let her live her own life and she met Shy on some other island somewhere and they rode off into the sunset. I don't want to think he went to jail for that.

But I didn't get around to watching it this evening, so I plan to see it tomorrow after I finish this paper that I have due. I'll make a separate thread about it after I watch it, because I'll want to know what was cut from the theatrical release. Spoiler [+] I hadn't even thought of it like that! I didn't really know how to interpret the ending, other than the obvious (Shy dumping the gun and fleeing the island [and thus the police]). I like your line of thought, though, so I'll go with that as well.

I watched the theatrical version and while I didn't hate it, I felt there were several things that made the end result as lopsided as it turned out. And I thought their performances in Haven were great too.

I liked the movie the way it was but it wasn't the best movie ever. I can't imagine what was cut out enough to make it a completely different movie though. I REALLY liked Haven. The story lacked a lot because they were trying to make it into a "tie all these different story-lines together at the end" kind of movie but it didn't need to be that. Paxton's character was completely out of sync with the rest of the movie, and quite honestly, I fast forward through his part(s) when he comes on screen. If they had made Haven a love story---even if it's been done a million times---the movie would have been better. Orlando and Zoe were great and I thought they had a lot of chemistry. I would have liked to have just seen a movie about their love story and the complications going on with her being who she is with her family and Shy being... a boy. It's the only part I end up watching anyway! And there were quite a few unanswered questions I would have liked answers to but they wasted their time with the other bs that didn't need to be there so now I will never know! That always bugged me.

I cannot stress this enough - it is a completely different movie with the edited footage back in. Usually with a DC it's just like a couple of scenes here and there. Not this time. The footage they edited out changed the entire dynamic of this film. I want someone else to have watched it so you guys don't think I'm nuts when I tell you this. The theater version and the DC are not the same film AT ALL.

But, should I go out of my way to watch the theatrical version first and then the DC? Because if I just watch the DC, then I really won't be impacted by the differences between the two...because I won't know what they are. Yeah, outside of schoolwork, I really do have that much time on my hands.

So many people just know him by LOTR and POTC where he really didn't have a chance to show his stuff. Put him in smaller films or in something very character driven like KOH and you'll see he can act and hold his own. Jayne, had you seen the theatrical version? What did you think of the differences?
